Toyota MR2 Roadster in the Whifbitz Workshop for Track-Focused Upgrades

We recently had this Toyota MR2 Roadster in the Whifbitz workshop for maintenance and a number of upgrades to prepare it for regular track use.

This particular car already features the popular 2ZZ-GE engine swap, replacing the original 1ZZ engine. The 2ZZ engine, commonly found in the Toyota Celica T-Sport and Lotus Elise, offers higher-revving performance and significantly improved power, making it a great choice for track driving.

As the car will be spending a lot of time on track, reliability and performance were key priorities. To help protect the engine during hard cornering and sustained high-G driving, we installed a baffled sump. This modification helps prevent oil surge by keeping the oil pickup properly supplied, which is especially important during aggressive track driving.

To improve the handling, we also fitted a set of BC Racing BR Series coilovers. These offer adjustable ride height and damping, allowing the suspension to be set up for improved grip, cornering stability, and driver feedback on track.

Braking performance is just as important on track, so we also installed a set of HEL Performance braided brake lines, along with Millers high temperature brake fluid. This combination helps provide a firmer brake pedal feel and improved resistance to brake fade during hard track driving.

Alongside the upgrades, we also carried out several maintenance items to ensure the car is in top condition for track use. The cam cover and timing chain cover seals were replaced due to oil leaks, and we completed a full engine oil and filter service. We also refreshed the gearbox oil, differential oil, and power steering fluid to make sure everything is running smoothly and reliably.

Inside the car, we replaced the original MR2 seats with a set of Toyota Celica seats, which offer improved support for the driver and passenger — something that makes a big difference during spirited driving and track sessions.

With these upgrades and maintenance completed, this MR2 Roadster is now much better prepared for track days, offering improved engine protection, sharper handling, more consistent braking performance, and improved driver support.
