About NGK Racing Spark Plugs
NGK Racing Series Spark Plugs do not share common design features as, for example, Iridium IX spark plugs do –  sharing a similar firing end configuration. Different tip configurations and materials are employed across the range to ensure a suitable match to the type of engine and intended use. Options include Iridium, Platinum, Gold Palladium, Nickel and Surface Discharge electrode designs, though not all configurations are available in all sizes. NGK Racing Spark plugs are categorised as such because they are designed specifically for strength, reliability and performance under prolonged extreme conditions – i.e. Racing. Extremely tight quality control ensures that NGK Racing Spark Plugs are as reliable as possible, some are even hand finished. Generally only available in colder heat ranges, NGK Racing Series Spark Plugs are not well suited to use on public highways where slow moving traffic and speed limitations may prevent the engine and/or spark plugs from reaching and maintaining the correct temperature for reliable operation – known as the ‘self cleaning range’.

When choosing the most suitable design you should consider the heat range, which must enable the plug to achieve and maintain the self cleaning range but not allow the plug to overheat, which may result in detonation and engine damage. You should also think carefully about tip projection design, a longer insulator nose and projected electrode will allow for smoother running and less fouling at lower loads but will reduce the thermal conductive efficiency of the plug and will add the risk of exposing the electrodes and insulator to extremes of the combustion process.

You should consider carefully whether it is necessary to make the upgrade to a racing spark plug, especially if the vehicle is used on the road. A standard nickel or Iridium IX Spark Plug in a slightly colder heat range will sometimes be a better all round option. Take advice on suitable spark plug tip configuration and heat range from your engine builder or tuner. Racing Spark Plugs are not considered to be OE and are therefore not recommended by NGK for any vehicles (with a very small number of exceptions). You should be aware and accept that using racing spark plugs is entirely at your own risk.
